The mobile market in Trinidad and Tobago has dominated the share of revenue generated by the telecoms and broadcasting sector and continues to grow.
According to the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT) Annual Market Reports for the Telecommunications and Broadcasting Sectors, the local mobile market has earned the largest share of revenues in the telecommunications and broadcasting sector between the years 2006 to 2011.
The report indicates that the mobile services generated revenues of $1.9b to $2.2b, annually. This was equivalent to a share of 44 to 51 per cent of total revenue for the telecoms and broadcasting sectors.The mobile market, therefore, is playing an increasingly important role in the country’s economic landscape.

Research in various markets have shown that people have an interest in spending more time on their phones although the results vary widely. A survey by Experian Marketing in May 2013 on US smartphone users suggests these owners spend an average of 58 minutes a day on their phone mostly texting and talking but also for social networking, games and web browsing. This is the lower end of the estimates as over in the UK research by mobile provider O2 and Samsung – Mobile Life 2013 Report- showed people spent 119 minutes a day using their device.
The functionality of the devices combined with businesses and government offices being more accessible and making more information available are contributing to the increasing usage. Clearly using mobile devices for social and business communications and entertainment is convenient and fun.
