Port-of-Spain, Trinidad - The distance between New Delhi and Mumbai is 1,150 kilometres. The distance between Mumbai and Port of Spain is almost 14,000 kilometres. This morning (Friday January 13th) however, journalists in Port of Spain and in New Delhi virtually sat face to face with each other and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, key ministers and other members of the India Trade Mission who were in Mumbai. The Prime Minister and her team were at the time facilitating a rare trans-continental media briefing in which Mrs. Persad-Bissessar disclosed details on a range of benefits coming out of the trade mission.

The meeting took place via a network of state-of-the-art Telepresence facilities owned by TSTT and communications giant CISCO. In TSTT, the Blink Telepresence facility was connected to similar CISCO facilities in New Delhi and Mumbai to bridge the 15,000-plus kilometre gap and put local journalists, their counterparts in India and the Prime Minister mere feet apart from each other.

Jay Alvi, Executive Vice President of Enterprise Services at TSTT said the Blink Telepresence rooms –one in Port of Spain and the other in San Fernando- are the first public facilities of their kind in the Caribbean. “The technology and layout are designed to make the interaction among participants an immersive experience. Persons, who may be thousands of miles apart, almost feel as though they are seated together in the same room. ”

Alvi said the Telepresence rooms were connected via dedicated 20 megabit links which made the visual and audio communications between locations fast, realistic, reliable and secure. “It is almost like people meeting in person. This is not just video conferencing but video conferencing on steroids where the 20mb dedicated secure connection provides an immersive high definition meeting experience.” The TSTT Executive said the Port of Spain and San Fernando facilities are already open to the public and added that his company already had the equipment for building a similar facility in Tobago.
