According to statistics, approximately one in four citizens struggle with basic reading and writing skills. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for literacy programs that can equip individuals with the tools they need to succeed.
In observance of International Literacy Day, bmobile was proud to reinforce its partnership with the Moms for Literacy Caribbean, a non-profit organisation dedicated to bridging the literacy gap in Trinidad and Tobago. The NGO’s Remedial Reading intervention programs have helped thousands of children and adults improve their literacy skills and unlock their full potential.
“No child must be denied the right to literacy,” said Operations Officer, Corretta Francis, who emphasised the importance of early intervention. “In our 30 years of tutoring, we have determined that many students are entering secondary school with weak reading, writing and comprehension skills. They become frustrated, and eventually drop out of school without achieving five CSEC passes. Continuous support for literacy programmes is crucial in reaching our national goal to end illiteracy by 2030.”
Founded in 1992, Moms for Literacy began its work after recognising that many children were leaving the primary school system unable to read, write and comprehend the written print effectively. Its programs focus on providing educational resources, tutoring, and literacy workshops. Children 5-16 are recommended to its Remediation Programme by the Ministry of Education, psychologists, teachers, and those who have experienced its success. Francis stated that bmobile's partnership with Moms for Literacy has been instrumental in expanding the organisation's reach and impact. “More people who desperately need our intervention are now able to receive it. bmobile has been a crucial supporting partner, and they play a significant role towards the educational empowerment of Trinidad and Tobago.”
Anjanie Ramesar-Soom of bmobile’s Corporate, Environmental, Social & Reputation Management team echoed similar sentiments, noting that education is the cornerstone of a thriving society. “At bmobile, we believe that every individual, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity to learn and grow. By supporting Moms for Literacy, we are investing in the future of our nation. bmobile is committed to being part of this important change as we work towards providing a brighter and more equitable future for all citizens,” he said.
International Literacy Day was declared by UNESCO in 1966 at the 14th session of UNESCO's General Conference. It was celebrated for the first time in 1967. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies around the world.
